100 air-mile exemption |
An exemption to the normal hours of service rules that applies if drivers stay within a 100 air-mile radius of the their normal work reporting location and they are released from duty after 12 consecutive hours on duty. |
AOBRD |
Automatic on-board recording device. A device that can be used to record hours of service before the electronic logging device (ELD) rule compliance date of December 18, 2017. |
CDL |
Commercial driver's license. |
Co-driver |
A second driver, who takes turns with the main driver to drive a vehicle. |
DVIR |
Driver vehicle inspection report. A special form that drivers fill in as they inspect their vehicles. |
ELD |
Electronic logging device. A device that can be used to record hours of service and the rules that drivers must comply with from December 18, 2017. |
FMCSA |
Federal motor carrier safety administration. |
General exemption |
An exemption to the HOS ELD regulations. |
HOS (hours of service) |
A daily status report giving the amount of time a driver spent in various activities. |
Job |
An appointment to do work at a specified time and location, for a specified length of time. |
Non-CDL short-haul exemption |
An exemption to the normal hours of service rules that applies if drivers drive vehicles that do not require a CDL, and if they stay within a 150 air-mile radius of the their normal work reporting location. |
Off Duty |
An HOS status indicating that the driver is not on duty: driving or performing other on-duty tasks. |
Oilfield |
A setting used within Hours of Service to specify whether a driver is at an oilfield. |
On Duty |
An HOS status indicating that the driver is not driving, but performing other on-duty tasks. |
Personal Conveyance mode |
A mode that allows drivers to use a vehicle for authorized personal use without the driving time counting towards their HOS limits. |
Post-trip DVIR |
A DVIR form that is completed after completing a job, when logging off. |
Pre-trip DVIR |
A DVIR form that is completed before completing a job, when logging on. |
Sleeper Berth |
An HOS status in which the driver takes a break and spends time in the sleeper berth of the truck. |
Status |
An indicator of the state of a driver using Hours of Service. Status can be On Duty, Off Duty, Driving, or Sleeper Berth, or, if using oilfield options, In/Out Oilfield or Waiting. |
Unregulated Driving Mode |
A mode that allows drivers to drive a non-commercial motor vehicle without the driving time counting towards their HOS limits. |
Yard Move mode |
A mode that allows drivers to maneuver their vehicle around a yard, for example at a customer site or at the depot, without the driving time counting towards their HOS limits. |
